Our Philosophy
The Lionheart School embraces a philosophy of using research based curricula modified to accommodate each student’s individual learning challenges. These methods include project based learning, in which educational experiences are tied into designated themes that help students form connections more readily. We also use an integrative learning approach with curricula in reading, social studies, science, writing, math and technology.
Research-based curricula is modified to accommodate each student’s individual learning challenges that include:
- Linda-Mood Bell®
- Orton-Gillingham®
- Handwriting Without Tears
- Keyboarding Without Tears
- Michelle Garcia-Winner’s Social Thinking Curriculum: To help foster development of Theory of Mind, perspective taking and social cognition.
- Portfolio-Based Assessment: Students accumulate work throughout the year, revisiting and editing certain assignments and building new assignments off of others. Rather than create an over-focus on grading individual assignments, we help students look at their entire body of work, seeing what they do in a larger, more meaningful context.
- Project-Based Learning: Students work on several projects during the year that integrate many of their learning goals.
- Reading Curriculum: Various developed curriculums are selected based on the individual profiles of the students. Reading A-Z; RAZ Kids; Read It Once Again; Reading Mastery (SRA); Reading for Understanding (SRA); Wilson Reading Curriculum; Great Leaps are samples of the curriculums that we may use.
- Math Curriculum: Selected curriculums include Saxon Math, Right Start Math, Number Pals, Singapore Math, IXL. We also integrate math concepts and ideas in all facets of the school programs.
- Writing Curriculum: Various curriculums are used to create powerful writing strategies for all students. Journal keeping is used for some students.
- Life Lab Curriculum: a garden-based curriculum that cultivates children’s love of learning, healthy food, and nature. This curriculum involves the classroom and experiential learning centers.
- Common Core & State Standards Informed
- Focus on Executive Function, Emotional Intelligence and Theory of Mind development is done throughout all programming.
- Experiential learning occurs in the classroom, on field trips and through both Lionheart Gardens® and LionheARTisans™ programs.
